Graduation Requirements

Under 19 Years of Age – School Age Graduation

If you entered Grade 8, 9, or 10 in September 2004 or later, students under 19 years of age are on the 80 credit graduation program. A minimum of 80 credits received in Grades 10, 11 and 12 are required for graduation.

  • 48 of the 80 credits are Required Ministry Authorized Courses for Grade 10, 11      and 12
  • 28 credits are Elective Courses for Gr. 10, 11 and 12, of which 16 credits at the      Gr. 12 level include Language Arts 12
  • 4 credits for Portfolio Assessment*

    *Portfolio Assessment: The Graduation Portfolio is a paper-based or electronic collection of your work or other records of achievement. The portfolio begins in Gr. 10, with specific support and guidance provided as part of the Planning 10 course. The Grad Portfolio is presented for assessment during the Gr. 12 year.

    Over 19 years of age – Adult Graduation

    Adult Graduation 1995 (52 credits)

    If you entered Grade 11 or 12 in September 2004, you will be required to complete 52 credits to meet graduation requirements. Students on this program have until 2010 to graduate. It then expires and you must graduate on the 2004 requirements.

    Adult Dogwood

    To be eligible for the Adult Graduation Diploma, a person must be 19 years or older, or 18 years old and out of school for at least a year, with approval from the enrolling institution. To graduate, adult students must earn a minimum of 20 credits from at least five courses, worth four credits each including:

    Adult Graduation................................................20 credits
    1 Language Arts 12..................................................4 credits
    1 Math 11................................................................4 credits
    3 Grade 12 courses................................................12 credits or
    2 Grade 12 courses.................................................8 credits and
    1 Socials Studies 11 or BC First Nations 12................4 credits

  • Three courses must be taken as an adult.
  • Prior Learning Assessment may be used to meet any of the requirements for the      Adult Diploma. Prior Learning Assessment involves a variety of techniques      including equivalency reviews, challenge processes, in-depth interviews,      exemption processes, etc.
  • Students in both the College ABE and Secondary Graduation Programs will have      the option of writing the provincial exams for all provincially examinable courses.
  • Approved courses in either the Ministry of Education or in the Ministry of Advanced      Education, Training and Technology may be used towards the BC Adult      Graduation Diploma.
