WestShore Teaching Garden

The WestShore Teaching Garden is a place where school age youth and community members of all ages can learn sustainable gardening practices through hands-on lessons and projects, throughout the year. Projects based at the Teaching Garden integrate a blend of learning opportunities and interests including organic gardening, landscape design, carpentry, media arts and fine arts for youth and adults. By involving various WestShore community organizations and businesses committed to sustainability, the Teaching Garden has become a venue to educate and involve both the local community and our youth in sustainable practices.

E-Learning Project

Teaching for the 21st Century: A Pilot Project on E-reading is a new study regarding the use of handheld digital e-Books as the conduit for sharing printed data such as novels and textbooks with the students at WestShore Centre. The intention of this project is to explore new reading devices (in this case, the Sony Digital Book Reader 700 Series) and the impact that this technology makes on this “born-digital” group. At WestShore we are excited to have such incredible partners to help us explore this new learning phenomenon. The partners within our study are the University of Victoria: Digital Humanities Department as well as Faculty of Education, Digital Humanities faculty from Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia, School District #62 Sooke and of course, Westshore Centre For Learning and Training.

Carpentry Program

The Carpentry program provides hands-on and project-based learning of basic carpentry skills. The aim of this course is to learn by doing. Students in this course will construct a variety of projects for the Teaching Garden and the community. Students learn workplace safety and basic carpentry and joinery skills under the guidance of experienced instructors. Projects are constructed at the WestShore Annex site then relocated and reassembled offsite. Students have the opportunity to receive certification in WHMIS, First Aid, & CSTS

Need a garden shed built? Have a construction project? This past year the WestShore Centre Carpentry classes constructed raised garden beds, a 3-bin composter, produce booths and garden sheds. If you have a project for our students, please contact Roger at rcampbell@sd62.bc.ca or 250-391-9002 with your request.

Port Renfrew Programs at Pacheedaht First Nations

This year has been an exciting, growing year, for our Port Renfrew Adult Learning Program, which was scheduled in our classroom at the Pacheedaht Band office. Students had the option of taking a full range of academic courses. Twice a week, students were assisted in their learning by two WestShore teachers, Debbie Lodewijk and Dal Little. Students were also supported by Debbie Tennant, the tutor at Pacheedaht, and our vice-principal, Stephen McHugh.

In addition to the adult learning program, this past year a new carpentry program was started. WestShore carpentry teacher, Roger Campbell, worked with Denise Chewka to develop an innovative carpentry program that supported the building of projects needed by Pacheedaht, and also addressed the learning outcomes for Carpentry 12 to provide graduation credits for the adults who participated. The results were phenomenal. In one year over 10 projects, small and large, were completed, providing carpentry skills to those who participated and many new constructs in the community.

The projects completed this year were:
  • Compost shelter
  • Garbage and recycling shelter
  • Community garden fence and gate
  • Three 8 x 12' sheds
  • New basketball hoop and backboard
  • 260 foot fence around children’s playground
  • Deck and ramp repairs for the Band Office building
  • One cedar picnic table
  • Shelving unit for the Band Office
  • Locking storage cabinets for tools
  • Two cedar benches
We are very proud of our students and the many accomplishments they made this year and we look forward to working with each of them again next year.
